Today is International Surfing Day! How do I know this? Because I was raised at the beach and everyone I have ever known surfs - and because I am a member of the Surfrider Organization.
Surfrider is a great organization dedicated to keeping our beaches clean, safe and FUN! In honor of today, I thought I would share the email I received today from our local chapter here in Virginia Beach:
INTERNATIONAL SURFING DAY!!
Ever needed a legitimate excuse to go surfing? Well, on Tuesday June 21, 2005, you finally have it: It?s International Surfing Day! This is the unofficial, official surfers’ holiday and gives us a chance to promote and celebrate the sport while bringing awareness to the state of our oceans and beaches.
Why Tuesday June 21st? It?s the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, thus giving you plenty of time to get down to the water.
Surfing Magazine and Billabong have partnered with the Surfrider Foundation and its many chapters to organize surf sessions and beach cleanups nationwide on this day. Events will be held in Hawaii, California, the gulf coast, and the entire Eastern seaboard. The Virginia Beach Chapter is not planning an event at one specific beach, instead here?s all you gotta do:
Step 1) Go to your nearest beach
Step 2) Thoroughly immerse your toes in the sand and enjoy
Step 3) Catch a wave or three or four (if there are any)
Step 4) As you leave, pick up at least one piece (or three or four) of trash off the beach.
See! Can you think of a better way to spend a Tuesday? Neither can I.
Mahalo, and see ya in the water!
