Saturday’s Sundries-08/20/05

Well, I am always at a loss for something to post on Saturday’s, so I am going to do a tidbits section like TJ does.  She’s got something going there, sometimes you have a lot of little things to say, none of which are worth an entire post.  So, sorry TJ, but I think I’ll steal your idea and use it here too!  Mine will be called Saturday’s Sundries.

  • My son has learned to point at my chest and laugh and say “boobies” - we are proud.
  • I am hosting a women’s “fun” party tonight for a group of about 15 women as a wedding shower/bachelorette party for my girlfriend.  Anyone need a new vibrator?
  • I just finished emptying all the overflowing garbage cans in the house and I am not happy about it, as I feel this was clearly listed as one of his duties in the marriage contract!
  • I have spent WAY to much money on the aforementioned party.
  • I told my husband that a lot of the women out in blog land have their husbands guest post or have them do something on their blogs and that it would be nice if he did that for me.  He responded by saying that those women probably give their husbands blow jobs on a regular basis and therefore he doesn’t have to do shit on my blog until he receives the same treatment!  I HATE HIM!
  • I always make it a point to look at my cashiers nametag in any store and address them by their name.  “Hi Curtis” “Thanks Curtis” “You were great Curtis” “Have a great day Curtis”
  • My phone number has a lot of one number in it, so I constantly get phone calls from children playing with their parent’s phones and dialing a bunch of numbers.  When I answer, they are still pushing all of the numbers and I can hear their parents in the background.  I should probably get it changed.  UPDATE: I just received my third call since 9:00 AM, it is 10:00 AM.
  • Quicken Bill Pay has once again double paid some of my bills, causing me to bounce checks on other bills.  Not only will I not be using their services anymore, but I am considering finding out where they are located and bombing those f—kers!

Aloha Friday - 08/19/05

Aloha Friday is brought to you by the letter A and by Snarky!

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? Did you know what it was when you ate it?
I cannot think of what the strangest thing I have eaten would be, since I am one of those people that only likes what I likes!  I do not like seafood and I do not like anything with a funny texture.  I am a plain jane weirdo!

What’s your #1 method of communication with people? Email? Telephone? IM? Actually talking in person?
Mine is definately email and cell phone.  It’s funny, I barely ever talk on the phone when I am at home.  If I do, it’s to Nadine or Dena.  But I talk on my cell phone ALL THE TIME - and I pay the bill to prove it!  I cannot stay under 700 minutes a month to save my life.

Uproar forces Australian parliament to lift ban on saying “mate”

CANBERRA (AFP) - Officials in Australia’s parliament have been forced on Friday to rescind a decision to bar the building’s security guards from addressing visitors as “mate” after the move sparked a nationwide uproar.

Prime Minister John Howard—who has famously referred to US   President George W. Bush as “mate”—called the directive handed down Thursday barring use of the most quintessential of Australian colloquialisms “absurd and ridiculous”.

The opposition Labor Party branded the move “un-Australian” and party leader Kim Beazely said pressure on the guards to address people as “sir” or “madam” was a reflection of the elitist culture fostered under Howard’s nine-year-old conservative government.

“This is John Howard’s Australia. It’s all about masters and servants,” he said.

The Witch of Pungo

Since my good friend Dena brought up Grace Sherwood in my previous post, I though I would post Grace’s story today.  Grace is sort of a local legend around Virginia Beach, as she was known as the “Witch of Pungo.”  This is her story:

The Witchcraft case of Grace Sherwood is one of the best known in Virginia, with the early court records on file to back it up.  Witchcraft was a very serious and real thing to the colonists during the early 1700’s and everyone was constantly on the lookout for witches.  Grace was accused of bewitching a neighbor’s crop in 1698.

Grace Sherwood was the wife of James Sherwood and the mother to three sons. They lived in the late 1600’s - early 1700’s. Grace was an unusual woman for her times.  She was said to be strikingly attractive, strong-willed, and a non-conformist by nature. These traits were resented by her neighbors, who began spreading rumors about her witch-like behavior.  Being a very tall woman, she was threatening to many. She wore men’s pants and did not wear dresses. This was not heard of in those times.  It is easy to see how this got her into trouble. After eight years of slander from her neighbors, Grace was charged with witchcraft.

A jury of women were ordered to search her body for suspicious or unusual markings, thought to be brands of the devil himself, and naturally the jury found, “marks not like theirs or like those of any other women.” However, neither the local court nor the Attorney General in Williamsburg, would pass judgment on declaring her a witch. It was finally decided that Grace, “by her own consent, be tried in the water by Ducking, (dunking).” Water was considered to be the purest element and the theory was that it would reject anything of an evil nature. Based on this theory, the accused was tied up and thrown into the water. If the person drowned, he was declared innocent of witchcraft; if he could stay afloat until he could free himself, he was declared a witch.

On July 10, 1706, Grace Sherwood, was marched from the jail (which is located near the present day site of the local Old Donation Church) down the dirt road (now the every day traveled Witchduck Road), tied and cast into the Lynnhaven River.  This portion of the river has since been named Witch Duck Bay in memory of the occasion.  As predicted by her accusers, Grace managed to stay afloat until she could free herself and swim to shore. She was jailed and awaited trial for witchcraft for nearly eight years, when the charges against her were dropped due to the softening of her accusers hearts, and she was set free. She moved back to her Pungo home.  Her husband had died in 1701, so her children had been sent away to live with relatives.  She lived in the Pungo home until her death at the age of 80 which was so rare in those days.

The original foundation and chimney still remain from Grace’s house and every Halloween, like clockwork, people gather there.
