Hip Bursuckus

image

I think I have hip bursitis in my right hip.  I have had horrible pain in my hip on and off since last summer.  Some weeks it is really bad and some weeks it is non-existent.

Bursitis is caused by inflammation of a bursa, a small jelly-like sac that usually contains a small amount of fluid. Bursae are located throughout the body, most importantly around the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and heel. They act as cushions between bones and the overlying soft tissues, and help reduce friction between the gliding muscles and the bone. The main symptom of hip bursitis is pain at the point of the hip. The pain usually extends to the outside of the thigh area. In the early stages, the pain is usually described as sharp and intense. Later, it may feel more achy and spread out.

I am going to the doctor in a little while to have it checked out.  I have avoided going to the doctor since last summer because I do not want to hear him say I have to not run on it.  I am hoping he will give me some steroids or something to bring down the swelling and I will be on my way.  REALLY hoping that I don’t need a cortisone shot or some type of draining procedure that involves big needles, etc.  It better not effect my run this evening.  Hate this.

PS - I am choosing to believe this is 100% activity related and has nothing to do with age and no one can tell me different!!!  *puts fingers in ears and starts repeating la la la la*

PPS - The above picture is an actual rendering of my butt.  Just thought you should know that.

Shamrock 2011

image

The kids have been bugging me to get them all signed up for the Shamrock races in March so that they can join the Running Club at school and start training for them, so today I registered them and myself.  I am not doing the Half Marathon this time (although I am probably in WAY better shape to run one than I was for the two I have previously completed, and by completed I mean did not die in the process).  Kaiden and I will be running the 8k together and I am happy about that… happy to run with her and happy she wants to do it.  Ashton (much to my surprise) asked and begged all on his own to be a part of this as well, so I signed him up for the Final Mile and he too will participate in Running Club every week to prepare for it.  Dena and Ethan will also be running the 8k and I am excited about that as well.

Here is the route for our 8k run:

Not happy about how much of it will have to be run on that concrete boardwalk (I HATE running on concrete) but oh well, this one is for Kaiden.  Guess I am going to have to let her come running with me some to help her prepare.  Five miles is a lot for her little legs!

My New Gadget

image

For Christmas I got the Garmin FR60 Sports Watch with accompanying Foot Pod and Heart Rate Monitor.  I have used it twice now during runs to track my mileage, pace, heart rate, etc and I have to say I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS WATCH!  You put the foot pod on your shoe laces, strap on the heart rate monitor press a button on your watch and off you go.  In the two runs that I have taken with it (would have been more if the stupid snow we got buried under hadn’t taken a week to melt) I have found that it is pretty spot on accurate with my mileage.  I have driven the routes I take with my car, mapped them on “mapmyrun” dot com and now tested the watch and they all come out pretty much the same.  It also came with a USB stick that when my watch comes close to, automatically transfers all my info and uploads it so I can track my workouts.

I am excited to keep using it and watch myself better my pace/time.  Hands down one of my favorite Christmas gifts, outside of my new running shoes/socks and my ponytail hat.  If you run or walk or even bike (there is a bike attachment you can buy) this is an AWESOME watch to own.

I spent my lunch break on my elliptical.  Yay!  A cheeseburger would have tasted better!
